Kalymnos climbing for beginners: how to start
You do not need to climb hard to enjoy Kalymnos. The island has entire sectors of easy routes (grades 4 and low 5), short approaches and guides who take complete beginners out for a first day on real rock.
Why it works for beginners
- Volume: thousands of routes means the easy grades fill whole sectors, not just a few leftovers.
- Short walk-ins: many crags sit 20 to 35 minutes above the Masouri road.
- Well-bolted limestone and a scene that has welcomed learners for twenty years.
- Rest days are actual holidays here: beaches, boats, tavernas.
How to start
Never climbed outdoors? Book a guide or an intro course. Local climbing schools run first-time days, family sessions and lead courses in season, gear included. The climbing shops in Masouri are the place to ask; they also rent equipment.
Climb indoors already? Bring or rent a 60m rope and 14 to 16 quickdraws. For routes and topos, use the Climb Kalymnos guidebook and site. That is the community standard and we point you there instead of copying it.
When to come
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the seasons. Summer climbing means early starts and shade, including the east-facing walls on Telendos. October is festival month: busy and sociable.
